Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig

Riccardo Chailly, conductor

Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV 1069

Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 in E major, WAB 107

There will be a pre-concert lecture by Scott Burnham at 3:45pm in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse.

In his luminous Symphony No. 7, Anton Bruckner harnesses tremendous orchestral forces and a vast palette of harmonic colorings to traverse the entire range of human experience. Renowned Brucknerian Riccardo Chailly leads the legendary Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, which premiered the piece in 1884, in this jubilant program that opens with Bach’s glorious Orchestral Suite No. 4. Performed on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the concert shines as a stirring tribute to humanity’s resilience.

The Gewandhaus Orchestra is the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world, with a history stretching over 250 years. Its distinguished reputation and enduring influence on the history of music, its countless appearances on every continent of the globe since 1916 and hundreds of recordings have made the Orchestra one of the most beloved of our time.
